Access Your Gmail Within Outlook
Many people do not know that they can access their Gmail within Outlook. I am here today to tell you how to do it because it will save you enormous amounts of time.
I happened upon my co-worker Shelia the other day. As we were talking, she said that she needed to take a second to check her personal email account. As she turned to her computer, I noticed that she opened up Google, the best of the top ten search engines, and visited the Gmail page.
I said to her, “Sheilia, why are you going to the Gmail page?”
She looked at me and said, “It’s like I just told you. I have to check on my personal email to see if I got a response from a friend.”
I then proceeded to show her how she can access her Gmail directly from her Outlook client. It only took about 2 minutes for us to do this and afterward she turned to me and said, “Holy cow, you just saved me about a half an hour each day. I am always going back and forth between Outlook and Gmail.”
There are many people who are in Shelia’s situation. Like Shelia, people open Outlook for their business mail and then use Firefox, one of the best web browsers, to switch over to their personal email accounts; they don’t need to do this. You can read your Gmail from your Outlook client and it is very easy.
There are two ways to do this but one is better than the other.
The first method-which I don’t recommend-is by using a protocol called POP. POP stands for Post Office Protocol and it downloads all of your mail to Outlook. To set this up, you want to make sure that it is enabled by clicking the “Settings” tab in the upper right corner of your Gmail window and then clicking on the “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”. There you simply want to make sure that POP is enabled.
The second method is called IMAP and this is what you probably want to implement. IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and it is much more efficient than POP. To facilitate this, you simply need to make sure that IMAP is set in the same window within your Gmail settings by clicking the “Enable IMAP” radio button.
To get each of these to work within Outlook, you will visit the “Tools | Email Accounts” in your Outlook client and input the proper configuration.
After I showed Shelia how to do this, she was immensely grateful as it saved her a lot of time. It will also save you an immense amount of time too so give it a try.
