I’m trying to configure my gmail account in Outlook 2007 for POP3 access (not IMAP). However the only option in setting up my email account is for IMAP. I tried deleting the account and re-adding it, but still no luck. Any suggestions?

If the option to setup a POP, IMAP, or Exchange email account type is missing or disabled, it may be enabled by the following steps:
Go to registry editor
HKEY Current User
Software
Microsoft
Office
12.0
Outlook
Options (single click)
Change the value of Disable POP3 (or whichever account type is disabled) from 0 to 1
This will enable the disabled account type.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 and MS Office Outlook 2003 have different formats and a different overall size limit for Personal folders (PST) file. Comparing the two, the PST files from the earlier versions of MS Outlook had inferior functionality when compared to the latest version of MS Outlook. MS Outlook 2002 and the previous versions created PST files that were in American National Standards Institute (ANSI) format and their overall size limit is of 2GB.
Comparatively, PST files created with MS Outlook 2007 version as well as MS Outlook 2003 version are in Unicode format. In addition to this, the overall size of PST files has a threshold size limit of more than 2GB that is imposed in ANSI based PST file. In the latest versions, the limit for Unicode PST file in MS Outlook 2007 as well as in the Outlook 2003 version is devised to be 20 GB.
The earlier versions of MS Outlook, MS Outlook 2003 Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4rev1 (IMAP4) accounts and HTTP accounts use PST files that do not utilize the Unicode format. This is the reason why, PST files of IMAP or HTTP accounts in MS Outlook 2003 is limited to 2GB threshold size. Comparatively, Outlook 2007 has Internet Message Access Protocol Version 4rev1 (IMAP4) accounts and HTTP accounts that utilize Unicode format PST files and do not have 2GB limitation issue.
When a user wants to access data in MS Outlook 2003 or even MS Outlook 2007 PST file from a different computer having any previous version of MS Outlook installed or if the user has installed Outlook 2007/2003 and wants to remove the same to use a previous version of MS Outlook, then the user needs to alter the PST file format to ANSI. This change of format can be done manually, by following the steps given below:
1.Launch Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2003
2.Go to File menu > Data File Management > Add
3.Click MS Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File (PST)
4.Click OK
5.Type Name of the PST or accept the default name suggested by the software
6.Click OK
7.Now click Close
8.Click Folder List at the bottom of navigation pane
9.In the navigation pane, you will see your new PST file
10.Drag the PST file from your existing Outlook email client folders to the new PST file that you created
If there are certain email messages or items in your PST file that comprise of Unicode characters, and then they will not appear in the new PST file that you created. Sometimes, accessing PST file might become difficult due to corruption or damage issues in these files. This is the high-time you must switch to scanpst.exe to ensure your PST is safe. Scan pst exe is an amazing in-built utility that comes integrated with MS Outlook. The scanpst.exe tool allows you to scan pst so that you can ensure the preserved integrity of the PST file.
