keep trying with what I think is the right settings, but keep getting a request for the password for smtp …. I enter the password and then it rejected

yahoo email you can upgrade to yahoo mail plus to get
the full pop3 service for access to
Outlook,
Thunderbird,
Incredimail, and others

I think you can use Gmail and access the mail using POP3. Most people don’t use POP3, because you can just access the Gmail email using a web browser. Browser access has been gaining popularity more and more because if you can find a computer with web access you can get your mail.

With POP3 you need to have an email client program of some kind. Unless the service that provides the POP3 also has some kind of “webmail” access as well.

Gmail and the other free services are great, but I generally recommend that clients get an inexpensive web hosting account from a place like Lacehost.com. There entry level hosting is only $ 2 a month and you get a full-featured hosting account that should have enough storage for most people’s email storage needs. And along with normal POP3 account(s; you can have as many as you like) you get a number of other features including 3 different webmail applications for remote access. If you later want a web site, you already have the resources to do that.

The option of getting a hosting account will require that you also get a domain name, but for less than $ 15 a year it doesn’t cost much and one large benefit is that you can have an email address that NEVER changes as long as you own your domain. The hosted solution also allows you to create unlimted email forwarding addresses. I use email forwards when I need to give out my email address, but I am not sure if I will get spam from doing so. I just create a forward, like “facebook@mydomain.com” and if I later get spam, I know where the spam is coming from and I can just delete the forward to stop the spam. Simple!
